Getting a Haircut in Korean: Say This, Not "조금만"

September 29, 2026 · 5 min read

The line that works is 기장은 그대로 두고 다듬어만 주세요 — keep the length, just tidy it up. 조금만 fails at a Korean salon not because it is bad Korean, but because it names an amount without naming what is being measured. Cut a little? Leave a little? The stylist has to guess, and guesses get cut off.

What do I say when I sit down?

Six lines, and you say the first one before anyone asks. A Korean salon visit is a short, predictable exchange: you name the service, they ask how you want it, you name the thing you are protecting, they offer one adjustment, you accept or decline, they send you to the sink. Say all six out loud once and you have already had the conversation.

1 · You — 커트만 하려고요. keoteuman haryeogoyo
Just a cut, please.

[어떠케 해 드릴까요] eotteoke hae deurilkkayo
How would you like it?

[기장은 그대로 두고, 다드머만 주세요] gijangeun geudaero dugo, dadeumeoman juseyo
Keep the length, just tidy it up.

[수튼 좀 처 드릴까요] suteun jom cheo deurilkkayo
Shall I thin it out a bit?

5 · You — 네, 조금만요.
Yes, just a little. I'll leave the bangs.

[그럼 샴푸 먼저 해 드릴께요] geureom syampu meonjeo hae deurilgeyo
Then let's do the shampoo first.

Notice where 조금만 finally becomes safe: line 5, after the stylist has put 숱 — hair volume — on the table. The amount word works the moment somebody has said what it applies to. Leading with it is the mistake; using it is not.

Which line should I memorise?

Line 3, because it is the only one that guards against the outcome you actually fear. Everything else in the visit can go wrong and still be survivable. Length cannot — it does not grow back before your next flight.

The word doing the work is 다듬다, and it is not a gentler version of 자르다. 자르다 is to cut, and cutting removes length. 다듬다 is to tidy: clean up the shape while the length stays where it is. A stylist who hears 다듬어만 주세요 understands you want the haircut you walked in with, neatened. A stylist who hears only 조금만 has an amount with nothing attached to it, and has to fill the gap themselves.

Say it in three breath groups, then once whole:

  • 기장은 그대로 두고 — gijangeun geudaero dugo
  • 다듬어만 [다드머만] — dadeumeoman
  • 주세요 — juseyo

In the middle chunk the ㅁ of 듬 slides forward into the empty slot of 어, so 다듬어 lands as [다드머] rather than three separate blocks. That slide — linking sounds — is the most common reason a sentence you can read goes straight past you when a Korean says it.

What will they say that isn't in the script?

Three questions, in roughly this order of likelihood. None of them is in your script, and each has a one-line answer.

얼마나 자를까요? eolmana jareulkkayo — How much shall I cut? Answer with your hand, not a number: 손가락 한 마디만요. [손까락 한 마디마뇨] songarak han madimanyo — Just one finger joint. 마디 is a finger joint, and "한 마디 정도" is how Korean customers themselves describe a small trim, not a tourist workaround. If you would rather use centimetres, 2센티만요 fits the same slot.

[원하시는 스타일 이쓰세요] wonhasineun seutail isseuseyo — Do you have a style in mind? [사진 보여 드릴께요] sajin boyeo deurilgeyo — I'll show you a photo. Reaching for your phone here is completely ordinary, and it will do more for the result than any sentence you could assemble under pressure.

[암머리도 다드믈까요] apmeorido dadeumeulkkayo — Shall I trim your bangs too? [아니요, 암머리는 그냥 둘께요] aniyo, apmeorineun geunyang dulgeyo . Note that 앞머리 is written with a ㅍ and said with an ㅁ — the ㅁ of 머 reaches back and closes the ㅍ into a matching sound, the same change that turns 감사합니다 into [감사함니다]. There is a whole post on that change.

What quietly backfires?

알아서 해 주세요 [아라서 해 주세요] araseo hae juseyo — do it however you think. It is not rude, and Koreans say it all the time. But it is famously the hardest order a stylist can get: it hands them every decision with no information, and if you dislike the result afterwards, you have nothing to point to. The line that gets the same freedom with a steer attached is 어울리는 스타일로 추천해 주세요 eoullineun seutaillo chucheonhae juseyo — recommend something that suits me. Same request; the decision stays shared, and it invites the stylist to ask you a question or two first.

The other one is how you address the person. 아줌마 and 아저씨 are what you may have picked up at a market stall, and in a salon they can come across as over-familiar. 선생님 or 디자이너님 is what customers actually say.

How do I change the script for a different cut?

Swap line 3 and the other five stand exactly as written.

What you wantSay thisHow it soundsRomanization
A trim, no length change다듬어 주세요 [다드머 주세요]dadeumeo juseyo

짧게 is worth one extra look. The double batchim ㄼ gives up its ㅂ, and the ㄱ behind it tightens, so the word arrives as [짤께] with no trace of the ㅂ you can see on the page.

FAQ

Is 조금만 ever enough on its own?

Once the other person has named what they are measuring, yes. By line 5 the stylist has already said 숱, so 조금만요 can only mean one thing. As an opening line, with nothing named, it is a question rather than an instruction.

What if I only remember one word?

It asks for the shape to be tidied while the length stays put, which is what most people walking into an unfamiliar salon actually want, and it is short enough to survive nerves.

Do I need the hair vocabulary to get through this?

No. Four nouns carry the whole visit: 기장 (length), 숱 (volume), 층 (layers), 앞머리 (bangs). Every request in this post is one of those four plus 주세요.
